The National Transport Corporation (NTC) has been set up in the early 1980s to operate public transport services in Mauritius. From modest beginning after taking over the assets of ex-Vacoas Transport Co. Ltd, NTC has grown into a major transport institution.

It is the largest fleet owner of the island with 556 buses, covering almost fully the urban region and more than one third of the route network of the country.

On the 24th April 1979, the National Transport Corporation was created by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 5 of 1979) with the following objects:-
“To establish and operate public services and other ancillary service in any part of Mauritius”.
In carrying out its objects under the Act, the Corporation must:

      have due regard to the interest of the travelling public and of the employees of the existing companies;
operate on commercial principles and ensure a reasonable return on its capita

The National Transport Corporation has during these past 37 years grown into the single largest Bus Fleet Operator of the island
